Urea is a nitrogenous organic compound composed of two amino groups and a carbonyl group and is commonly found as a metabolite in urine.
Plant Biology Applications
Urea is largely used as plant fertilizer where it is metabolized by symbiotic urease producing soil bacteria into products readily assimilated by plants.
Electrophoresis Applications
In addition to plant applications, urea is commonly used to denature and increase solubility of proteins making it a useful chemical in gel electrophoresis. Urea is extremely soluble in water (412 mg/mL).
